SCIENCE CONTESTS - see me in 104 if interested!

US FIRST Robotics - We will enter for the second time this year. Click for our webpage.

Science Olympiad - Of course we will enter a team and plan to go to the States for the third time. We will have the new 2005 events and rules in early October. Builders will meet with me on a regular basis.

CWRU Lego Robotics Contest - We will enter again this year after missing last year. See this year's web page.

DuPont Challenge - Essay contest we have entered before. Write 700-1000 words.

Toshiba NSTA Exploravision - Students work in groups of two to four, simulating Research and Development (R&D) teams.

NASA DIME Drop Tower School Competion - We will enter this for the first time this year if they have it.

INSPIRE Project - Not a contest, but research into Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio waves. We have a radio receiver kit that needs to be built. I don't even know if the project is still going. I will check if you are interested.

February 24 - Problems

1) Mars is 2.278 x 108 km from the sun and takes 687 days to orbit the sun. If Neptune is 4.494 x 109 km from the sun, how long is its year in days? (Use Kepler's third law. Set two equations equal to each other and cancel what you can. You should be left with only T and r to various powers.)

2) The outermost particles in Saturn's rings are 1.35 x 105 km from its center and are moving at 17 km/s. Find the mass of Saturn. (Use Newton's law of gravitation (force) and the radial accelation to find the radial force. Set those equal and solve for mass.)

3) Find the location of the place between the Earth and the moon where the gravitational force on an object of mass m would cancel. (Call the total distance, 3.84 x 105 km D and the distance this place is from the moon x. Write the two force equations and set them equal. Call the mass of the earth me and the mass of the moon mm. The mass of the earth is 5.98 x 1024 kg and the mass of the moon is 7.36 x 1022 kg.)
